Building Your Alter Ego
What is an Alter Ego?
Deep inside every one of us exists an alternative self: The Alter Ego. An Alter Ego means an alternative self, which is distinct from your “normal” personality. An Alter Ego can be the key to opening another version of yourself, one who dares when you do not. The Alter Ego is not about creating a false mask — it is about finding the empowerment that already exists inside you.
Why create an Alter Ego?
You have hidden capabilities, and your Alter Ego gives you the freedom to unlock the lurking, creative force you already have inside. There are many examples of artists and athletes using an Alter Ego actively to reach the best versions of themselves; Beyonce as Sasha Fierce, Snoop Dogg as Todd, David Bowie as Ziggie Stardust, Kobe Bryant as the Black Mamba. An Alter Ego is a tool that ANYONE, in any given situation and in any profession, can use to bring forth a better version of themselves.
It is a proven way of overcoming the self-doubt, negativity, and insecurity that hold you back and allows you to ultimately become your best self. But first, one needs to go on a deeply personal journey of self-discovery.
How to create an Alter Ego?
Sometimes, to find your own Alter Ego, it is easiest to think about your role models, as these often reflect our most precious traits and behaviors. You can also wear the clothes your Alter Ego would wear. And it turns out there's actual science behind this. It is called "enclothed cognition". Enclothed cognition is the idea that we attach a story to the clothing that we wear. In a study, the moment individuals put on a painters' coat they ranked higher on a creativity test, and when they put on a doctor's coat the same individuals began showing traits of someone who is more methodical and careful. And that is exactly what an Alter Ego can help you do.
